Wine Vines Analytics reveals most important American Wine Distributors

Wines Vines Analytics draws up a highly concentrated market, where the top four market players represent 80% of the wineries served by all.

03/07/2019

Wines Vines Analytics, a research group of Wines & Vines, has compiled a list of the most important US domestic wine distributors. It is a ranking based on different criteria such as the number or prestige of the represented wineries, the turnover, number of covered states and the percentage of consumers reached. The fact that the distributors have imported wine, beer or spirits is not taken into consideration.

Southern Glazer Wine & Spirits

Based in Miami, Florida, Southern Glazer currently operates in 36 states and has 1178 wineries in its portfolio. Moreover, the company was capable of a turnover of $16.5 billion, as of 2016.

Republic National Distributing Co.

Also known as RNDC, they’re the best-known operators of the wine market. With a turnover of $6.5 billion in 2016, they serve over 700 wine producers and operate in 22 states with headquarters at Grand Praire, Texas.

Breakthru Beverage

Breakthru Beverage is responsible for the distribution of the wine in 691 US wineries, operating in 15 states and which billed $ 5.4 billion last year.

Young’s Market Co.

Young’s Market Co. shines between the list with a turnover of 3 billion dollars in 2016, operating in fifteen states and being a distributor for 663 US wineries.

From here on, the ranking is made up of market operators who represent a much smaller number of producers, which allows us to define the American wine distribution sector as particularly concentrated towards the top. If in fact, we add up the number of wineries represented by the ten distributors in the ranking 4139, the first four represent well 3283, so just under 80%.

Johnson Brothers Liquor Co.

Serves 135 wineries and across 22 states

Heidelberg

Distributing 177 cellars, and operates only in Ohio and Kentucky.

Wine Warehouse

Follows only the Californian market, with 104 wine producers on their portfolio.

The Martignetti Cos

They are a historic American distributor, in the hands of the Martignetti family that has a license to distribute alcohol since 1933 (235 wineries and 22 states).

Empire Merchants LLC

Based in Brooklyn they serve 124 wineries and operating across 3 states

The Winebow Group

The Winebow Group represents 81 wineries operating in 20 states.
